Purchasing a laptop is a large investment, and that can be complicated by all of the options, manufacturers, and technical mumbo-jumbo that needs to be sifted through. Before you spend a lot of money on a laptop, it is important to spend a little time considering some basics that may affect the decision-making process.
1) Size/Weight: Ultra portables excel for frequent fliers who need just the essentials while on the road. Screen sizes are small, usually 10 to 12 inches. Battery life of about 4 hours. Thin and light laptops are perfect fit for both business users and students. Screen size 14 to15 inches. Battery life of about 4 hours. If you want desktop power, you need a desktop replacement. With screen Size of 15 to 17 inches, heavy weight and battery life less then 3 hours. 2) Battery Life: Check the battery life on the laptop. Insist that it is a Lithium-ion (Li+) battery (nearly all laptops will have this one). Choose batteries with a high voltage and a high mAh. Do not go for NiMH batteries, as you will have to keep charging them frequently. 3) RAM Having enough memory is vital to system performance, and lots of RAM lets you run more applications simultaneously. 1GB: Good for basic office apps, running one at a time. 1.5GB: Adequate for running several programs at once, photo editing, and basic 3D gaming. 2GB or more: Recommended for high-performance 3D gaming, demanding graphics work, and video editing. 4) Hard Drive: Notebook hard drives start at 80GB. Form factor may restrict your options, but if possible, go for at least 120GB or 160GB if you'll be storing lots of image or music files. 5) CPU: When it comes to processors, go with the fastest you can afford, regardless of the notebook’s form factor. 6) Ensure the laptop has two or more USB ports, as you will need them to attach your peripheral devices like printers and scanners. 7) Insist on an inbuilt LAN card and modem. There are basically two types of modems- internal modems and PC card-based modems. Make sure the internal modem is fast enough for your needs. Else, opt for the PC card-based one that sticks out of your computer, but is slightly better performance wise |
