Please quote sources where possible, also some of these may be weak or fabrications i.e. "Go in quest of knowledge even unto China." is not seen as a credible hadith.

May I ask Mr. Juniad out of natural curiosity that what offense does he see in this quote? I think the meaning is very clear that there should not be any boundary to seek knowledge, one can go to China and even to Thailand for seeking knowledge and new experiences.

CB your curiosity doesn't seem natural anymore, it stinks with political correctness. The truth is overwhelmingly evident and you are simply not interested in it. Dont try to impose your generous secular ideology on Islam and put your words into the mouth of muhammad, you are only making a fool out of yourself. And for your information the "seek knowledge" has never been on the TO-DO list of the prophet.

COSMICBOMBER, I would defer on the side on JUNAID on this.

You are right that there is nothing wrong with the sentiments of the quote. However, a lot of fabrications were starting to emerge a couple of centuries after the advent of Islam, due mainly to those engaged in debunking Islam. So, it had become necessary to distinguish between authentic Hadeeth and fabricated ones. A methodology was agreed upon by scholars, whereby, each Hadeeth would be verified through multiple sources, and only when they passed through those tests would it be regarded as an authentic Hadeeth (quote of the Prophet).

Scholars agree by and large that this particular saying did not pass the test rigorously enough. That does not mean it is definitely not a saying of the Prophet; it only means we are not sure.

Perhaps, it could be promoted as one of the "Anonymous" quotes we occasionally come across, since there is nothing wrong with the spirit of its message.
