The Chilean Heroes

The Chilean Heroes When the misguided Muslim youths of Kashmir are vandalizing and setting fire to public property at the instigation of coward and corrupt separatists leaders like Gellani and Mirwaiz, 33 miners in Chile are fighting a heroic battle almost 700 meter under Atcama desert since August 5, 2010 waiting to be freed earliest by November.

The 33 trapped miners - all Chileans except one miner from Bolivia have a range of ages, background and experience. The oldest, Mario Gomez, 63, has worked in the mines since the age of 12 and was thinking of retiring in November. The youngest is 19 year old Jimmy Sanchez, with only five months' experience.

A drill boring a rescue hole has now reached the 33 miners, however, it will take weeks for the 630m deep hole to be redrilled to allow the miners to be pulled out. The width is now 30cm and will need to be about 70cm. It is hoped the men can be freed by early November. The 32 Chileans and one Bolivian have survived longer than any other group trapped underground.

The plan to rescue the 33 men trapped 700m (2,300 ft) underground is a complex undertaking that could take engineers until the end of the year to achieve. In a similar operation in 2002, American rescuers spent two days drilling a hole just wide enough to fit a man to rescue nine miners trapped underground. But the Americans had to drill down just 74m. By comparison, the plan to rescue the 33 men in Chile nearly three quarters of a kilometre underground is a much greater challenge.

As the pilot hole is reamed out to a width of some 70cm, tonnes of debris and rock will fall down the hole. Engineers estimate that 12 - 15 tonnes of rock will need to be cleared by the trapped miners each day. They have at least two functioning trucks in the tunnel and other equipment for moving rubble. Diesel and other materials will be supplied down the various communication shafts.

Today, the Atacama region Governor confirmed that the Schramm T-130 probe had reached the cavern holding the trapped miners.

The T-130 is Plan B of three drilling operations and is expected to be the fastest.

Plan A is the Strata 950 and is expected to reach the men by Christmas.

Assembly of Plan C, the giant RIG-422 drill, was completed on Thursday but it has not yet started drilling. It has a two-month rescue timetable.

Chile celebrates its bicentennial independence celebrations on Saturday. President Sebastian Pinera will visit the mine, and the miners and their families are expected to raise the Chilean flag and sing the national anthem.

Thirty three men were trapped underground when the main access tunnel to the San Jose copper and gold mine collapsed on August 5. Further rockfalls hindered early rescue attempts and officials warned that the chance of finding the miners alive was slim.

But contact was eventually made on 22 August when a rescue team's drill probe broke through the area where the miners were sheltering - about 700m below the surface - and they attached a note saying: "All 33 of us are well inside the shelter."

Since then, the rescuers have sent food and medical supplies, specialist clothing, camp beds and other equipment down the borehole to make their lives more comfortable.

A hand-drawn sketch sent up by trapped miner Jose Ojeda shows how the three groups are divided and the areas where they are sleeping.

They also have designated places for resting, washing and a toilet area. Artificial lighting helps them keep a day and night routine - which psychologists say is important for living and sleeping patterns.

The relatives of the miners have since set up Camp Hope at the pithead when the first contact was made. While the miners lay trapped, one of the 33 trapped miners becomes a father for the third time after his wife gives birth to a girl named Esperanza, meaning hope.
