It is so shameful that an IFS officer who was posted in New York has been charged for enslavement of a young girl who is also incidentally an Indian.
Shanti Gurung has sued her former employer who is currently Director, Southern Division of the Ministry of External Affairs, for harassment and enslavement. This is the true picture of our so called educated and enlightened women who are themselves at the forefront of abuse of women who are less privileged and coming from a weaker economic background. Shanti says in her lawsuit that she was "essentially kidnapped" from India in 2006 at age 17 and was ordered to give daily massages and perform other chores. The suit filed on Thursday says Gurung was held in involuntary servitude for more than three years by Malhotra and her husband, Jogesh. The lawsuit seeking unspecified damages says Gurung, now 21, was paid only $ 120 over 40 months. She was alsos made to work 16 hours in a day without holidays and she was often refused food and had to sleep on the floor. Neena Malhotra took away her passport and she was almost held a prisoner at the couple's house in New York. As expected, there was no comment from Malhotra, or the Ministry of External Affairs or Consulate General of India in Manhattan. What a shame! What is the point of these symbolism that our president is a woman, or the speaker of the lower house is woman when women are abused liked slaves by the educated and elite class. What do you think will happen to Neena Malhotra? I think, nothing. Comments (14) Vani wrote on 04 July, 2010
This has become news because the crime happened in US and Shanti could hire a lawyer to sue the employer, but this is a regular story in India at many households and specially of the rich and powerful. Sometimes, the maids are also sexually abused. And most sadly, the women are at the forefront, they don't show any compassion.

Freedom is a nebulous thing. People do not often understand it. And thus end up abusing it.
In this instant case, the mindset of the bureaucracy shows that the servile nature of themselves, we love to have slaves slaving on us. Baaah! Quo vadis, woman? aaryesdee wrote on 04 July, 2010
Its happening even in several parts of India. The rich n famous can get away, but if its happened to be a common middle class, you will see the repo. This sorts of incidents often happens in Rajasthan and few sects has their own judicial system.
Nice Blog Vani'... Thanks for sharing it with us over here. sade wrote on 04 July, 2010
Another case of 'us' and 'them' where one is apt to be alienated and unmoved by the pain and suffering of the 'other', entirely unsympathetic to it being very far removed by whatever circumstances affect them. To these well endowed women, the poor slaves could very well be a lower form of life incomprehensible to them. Also, as you very rightly observed, Vani, the fact of our President or Speaker being women is only so much decoration arranged for by a ruling class which is primitively patriarchal in it's beliefs and conduct. As to things changing, i don't think so, not in a country where the so called liberated women themselves believe in the "ordained" superiority of the husband in a marriage. and in this, all religions are strangely united.

F to F massage? That's quite boring Neena Ji!
US police should consider all Indian diplomats and rich NRIs living in US as potential abusers of domestic help and conduct surprise raids. Sometimes, they will also marry girls from village and weaker economic section and use them as housemaids for their firang biwi. cosmicbomber wrote on 04 July, 2010
If they can profile Muslim names as potential terrorists, I think this profiling would be 100 times more accurate, there are lots of other Neena Malhotras living in US, these IAS/IPS/IFS class learn to abuse people while they get training in Dehradun, the entire government 4th class staff are kept to run errands for these babus.

It's similar to a karate student's conditioning, to separate yourself from the pain your body is experiencing, only here, the intern babus learn to separate themselves from the pain their victims suffer. Hey, guess what? I too have leftist, holier than thou tendencies! :We really need @#$%ng smileys, LOL:

It is a shame that our country could not act against this offender and abuser but at least the US judge could bring some sense of justice by slapping a 1.5 M fine on this woman. Where is she now?

Most Indians in positions of power are exploitative barbaric creatures who ought to be caged and never allowed to see the sunlight or smell the roses.
